Frequently Asked Questions

How do you select your caregivers?

Potential caregivers hear about us “word of mouth” or see caregivers with their clients out in the community. People who call for employment with Neighbors, Inc. are sincerely interested in helping senior citizens. We conduct extensive interviews, check references and have background checks.

How do you match the caregiver to the client?

We try to learn as much as possible about our clients and their needs, either from telephone interviews or by meeting most clients in person. We then match them with the most appropriate caregiver available.

What if I don’t like the person you send?

If you and the caregiver we send don’t ‘click,’ we will not send that person again. We know that good, comfortable communication is the key to a productive relationship between you and your caregiver. We want you to look forward to seeing the person we choose.

Do you visit with people in nursing homes and assisted living facilities?

Yes, we provide support, companionship and transportation for many residents of assisted living facilities as well as nursing homes. We also provide one-on-one support for individuals who live in memory impairment units who may need extra attention and reassurance.

What makes Neighbor different from other eldercare services companies?

Neighbors was started in 1990 by three local woman who had many connections in the community and a sincere desire to help people. Our hallmarks are communication, consistency between client and caregiver, and caring.

Who pays the caregiver?

Neighbors, Inc. pays the caregiver. You will receive a bill from us once a month.

How many hours per day of services does Neighbors provide?

Neighbors provides anywhere from one hour per day to 24 hour, in-home companion support. You may use Neighbors as little or as often as you wish. There is a minimum one-hour charge.

What if I need daily help with getting ready for my day?

Daily assistance (such as breakfast, lunch, and or dinner preparation) is a common request. We engage several caregivers and coordinate them as a team to provide as much or as little daily coverage as necessary. There is continuity of support and knowledgeable coverage if a caregiver should be unavailable for his/her shift.

How do I sign up and get started as a member of Neighbors?

In order to become a member of Neighbors LLC., just call us at (207-725-9444). We will send you our brochure and membership form. There is an annual membership fee of $24.00, which is billed the first time you use our services. We will gladly start services before you have returned your membership form.

What happens if it’s a weekend?

If you have a question, concern or need on a weekend, call the Neighbors telephone number (207-725-9444) just as you would on a weekday. If we are unable to answer your call in person, leave a message and we will return your call as soon as possible.

Why should I use Neighbors rather than an individual who advertised in the local newspaper?

Each of our caregivers has been through an extensive background check to ensure your safety. In addition, our large staff of caregivers is always available to back up regular caregivers when they are sick or on vacation. Caregiving is not just our business: it’s our passion, and we work hard to ensure that our clients receive the care and support that they need…day in and day out.
